Hilo

I tried searching to see if there was a thread on this word and I didn't find one so I hope this isn't a repeat. It is more of an expansion. I know that "hilo" means thread and can mean thread on a forum as well as a thread of clothing. However. I stopped by a coworkers house on Friday to pick something up and there were a couple other Hispanic guys out there fiddling with a weed-eater. I heard them talking about how the "twine" was jammed but one guy called the twine "hilo". Is that common and/or standard?

PS. That was one of my few conversations I have had with a native speaker outside of work people and it was really cool. And he just starts talking to me like he assumed I spoke perfect Spanish . A little intimidating but I know those are the ways to really learn better.
