Corredor de fondo

I have just read that the short story "The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner" is translated "La soledad de un corredor de fondo"
I have never heard the term corredor de fondo before, and wonder if this is the most common term for long distance runner. Can de fondo be used in other terms as well like camionero de fondo?
