Greengrocers

La verdulería is defined as greengrocer's. I have never heard the word used in English... EVER. My guess is that is means a "produce stand". Greengrocer is not even in the merriam webster online dictionary.

Upon further research, I have discovered it is a chiefly British word and that it is a retailer of fresh vegetables and fruit. Or in American English my best translation would be "produce stand" or farmer's market could possibly work.

Is verdulería a commonly used word in Spanish?

Like you said, in American English it means a produce store or a produce stand. They are very common in Spain, but I've seen them here and there. They don't always just sell vegetables and fruits.

Tienda de verduras or puesto de verduras could also be used.
Warning: colloquially, the word can mean obscenity.

Not really, I can't think of an obscene usage.
Una verdulera is a woman who talks loudly and often quarrels with people.

In spain we use la fruteria. It is not common to find shops solely on fresh produce, they are part of a larger shop, a section.
As a part of a shop, we'd call that productos del dia.

"verdulería" as obscenity it's not used since beginning 19th century
Perhaps you can hear a granny saying in front of a sex shop "esa tienda es una verdulería" but it's difficult to hear.
Agree with Plannet Hooper.

We use the word Fruteria, and we don't use the word Verduleria, I feel that the word Verdularia is very obscenity and less use in my country. It's not good taste.

la palabra verde (en forma de metáforo) en español tiene el mismo significado que la palabra blue (en metáforo)en inglés. Chiste verde= blue joke.
El otro día oí dos chicas hablando de un viejito raboverde y parecía un modo vulgar de decir dirty old man.
Verdulera parece una palabra un poco verde.

Yes, I agree with you the words as in English and Spanish mean the same.
