¿Cuándo necesito usar la "a" delante de un verbo indicativo?

Mi abuelo y yo hemos ido a pescar hoy.
Mi abuelo y yo hemos ido pescar hoy.

Mi abuelo y yo fuimos a pescar hoy.
Mi abuelo y yo fuimos pescando hoy.

My grandfather and I went fishing today.

Para el verbo ir y el significado "to go X-ing", la regla es ir a [infinitivo]: "to go fishing" = ir a pescar. No es correcto decir *ir pescando.

Algunos otros verbos tienen la misma regla, pero muchos otros verbos tienen una regla diferente. Es necesario aprender las reglas de cada verbo, y a veces de cada significado de un verbo, uno por uno.

Una breve lista de los verbos comunes que siguen la regla "la regla es ir a [infinitivo]:" sería muy útil.
