Introduction

hello everyone. im 48 years old from legazpi city, philippines. Recently i became interested in learning the spanish language. i think there is a revival of interest in the phillippines to re-introduce the language which was the official language together with english up to the 1950s. i recalled my grandpa and my father spoke in spanish. Now, castillian spanish isno longer spoken although many words in our dialects were of spanish origin. For example here in bicol lots of spanish words not found in Tagalog are used like trukes frm spanish trocar, kasi-kasi from casi, mustrar from mostrar, mos from vamos, aber from a ver, complot, estomago and many more. i think a spanish speaker can easily learn bicol than Tagalog.

Hola Luis. Mucho gusto. Bienvenido. Welcome. All you are saying is very interesting. I have
grown up with Philippinos here in California. I had a Philippino student that had just arrived
from the Philippines not to long ago in my Spanish class and he knew it seemed every Spanish
word I would say or mention and had never studied Spanish. I was really impressed. I think he
knew Tagalo only but maybe he spoke something like in Bicol. Another student was Philippino
American and did not know so much. Any way I'm interested in learning more from you and
comparing notes as they say. I should write some words in Spanish to see if you understand.

For example: antes, después, siempre, mañana, nunca, ayer, arriba, abajo, casi, nada, algo, mucho, poco,
donde, cuando, quien, cuanto, bien, bueno, malo, chistoso, caro, abierto, cerrado, fuerte, débil, fácil, joven,
viejo, hablar, escuchar, ir, venir, pensar, trabajar, descansar, dormir, despertar, vestido, camisa, gato, perro...

El policía persigue al ladrón. Tengo dos hijas. Vimos una película ayer. Quiero a mi marido. Esto es para ti.
A Juan le gusta la comida peruana, pero a mi me gusta la comida mexicana. Le cae mal su suegra.
Ayer conocí a una muchacha linda. Para que lo sepas. La sopa sabe a pescado. María se acuesta a las diez.
¿Cómo te llamas?

Yo soy un hombre sincero,
de donde crece la palma,
y antes de morirme quiero
echar mis versos del alma.

Hello villa,

thanks for your reply. here are my translations based on our bicol dialect.

antes- in Bicol this means Before. same in Spanish
despues- in bicol it is spelled despwes- same meaning in Spanish
nunca- spelled nunca in our dialect, means never
ayer- this means yesterday, but we don’t use it in Bicol, but I think some dialects in the visaya or Mindanao use it to mean yesterday.
bueno – its an expression we use to start a sentence.
abierto – we use abrido to mean open
cerrado- serado in bicol- means the same thing- or sarado- close
fuerte- in bicol means “good” we use fuerte to describe something good or great . for example delicious food ( the food is nice- fuerte ang kakanon)- kakanon means food
faci- pasil in bicol which means easy
joven- hoben or joven- this means young – same in Spanish
hablar- abla in bicol- but in bicol abla means speak- but it has a negative connotation
pensar- pinsar does not mean exactly the same thing as to think in bicol, it means to believe
trabajar- trabaho in bicol
descansar- we use deskanso to mean “ to rest”-
vestido- bestida- a womans kind of dress
camisa- kamiseta- means undershirt in bicol

The police pursued the thief. we watched a movie yesterday. I love my husband. this is for you.
Juan likes peruana dish, but I like mexican food. your father in law is ill. yesterday I met a pretty girl.
Para que lo sepas. For you to know. La sopa sabe a pescado. María se acuesta a las diez.Maria goes to bed at ten.
¿Cómo te llamas? Whats your name.

Yo soy un hombre sincero,
de donde crece la palma,
y antes de morirme quiero
echar mis versos del alma.

This a song entitled Guantanamera. I try to translate. trust me im not using a translator.

I am a sincere man,
from where the palm grows,
and before I die I want
to ( here im tempted to use the dictionary I will not- in bicol echa means throw or toss) throw my words from the soul.

jajajajaja ... bravo Luis, esto es fantástico. ¡No puedo creerlo! Estoy muy
impresionado con tu conocimiento de la lengua española. ¿Por qué hablar
inglés cuando tú me puedes entender perfectamente todo lo que te digo en
español. No más inglés para ti. Ahora solo hablo español contigo.
Espero con todo mi corazón que la lengua española volvera a
las Filipinas. ¿Tú entiendes todo lo que te he dicho?

You did a fine job with this paragraph, in spite of some errors that you made; it is easy to understand what you intended to say.

I have identified what is wrong, (marked what you could improve), (and given you a hint about why I marked it).

If you want more of an explanation on anything that I've marked, please ask about it and I or someone else will be happy to help.

Thank you for your responses. They have given much excitement.
Gracias por sus repuestas. Ellos me han dado muchos entusiamos.
