Cool Going to Mexico this Thanksgiving...

Hey all...

Going to Cancún (Isla de Mujeres to be more precise) this Thanksgiving for my cousin's wedding. Just wondering if anyone could recommend some good books/travel guides for the area, and give me some tips...

I'm a little bit worried about my Spanish, though I won't really need it much probably since it's mostly a tourist area...but I would really like to visit some of the more "authentic" Mexican shops and restaurants. I think I know enough to get around and have a fairly good conversation, but I really want to try to get better between now and then. I'm going to get a Spanish-only dictionary (thanks for the Amazon.com link David) for one thing, and see how I do without the "crutch" of a bilingual one, and I'll keep listening to my Pimsleur lessons I guess.

I've never been to Mexico before, so this will be exciting and a little scary...

Thanks very much!

Hey Zach:

Going to Cancún! How exciting!

Two bits of advice....... if you really want to visit the more authentic shops be careful. They can spot a tourist a mile away! All the store and restaurant owners speak English so no problems there. Stay where the tourists are at night. Do not go wander off by yourself. Don't carry too much money or jewelry.

Going to where the locals go sounds like fun but it can be dangerous.

Be safe!

I wish I could give you some advice but I've never been to that part of Mexico. Elaina's advice sounds pretty sound. Just try to have a good time and be safe.

I'll be looking forward to seeing some pictures and a post on your blog about it.
