pico de gallo

I was recently in Mexico. On a menu at a restaurant was pico de gallo. I ordered it and was surprised to find that it wasn't the tomato, pepper, cilantro and onion relish that I was accostumed to. Rather, it was large slices of jicama, cucumbers and carrots flavored with lime juice chile piquin. I have spoken to a Mexican , or perhaps he was Guatemalan on another occasion who had never heard of pico de gallo. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences with the regionality of foods in Latin America

What part of Mexico was that in? I've been to different parts of Mexico and the ingredients I've normally seen in pico de gallo (also known as salsa mexicana, because it's red, white & green, the colors of the Mexican flag) are tomato, onion, cilantro, salt, avocado & green chilies. I've also seen it with cucumbers or radishes as well, and sometimes it has lime juice squeezed on top.

I've also been told that pico de gallo can also be a tossed fruit/vegetable salad, dusted with chili powder. This would go along with what you were served.

You pick the ingredients and as long as they go well with each other, you have PICO DE GALLO!

I hope this was informational.

pico de gallo

Lots of good info.

I was in Guanajuato once, but never made it over to San Miguel de Allende. I drove through Dolores Hidalgo, but didn't have time to stay or see anything.
