Here are two very common ways:
¿Cómo has estado? ¿Qué tal te ha ido? |

¿Como has estado ultimamente? ¿Como te ha ido ultimamente? I take it the person was going through something and you already know so you just want to know about "lately".

A Mexican would just ask "¿Cómo has estado?". The verbal tense already expresses "lately" for us.

Pardon me, but is "estado" the present progressive tense of "está"?
Does it always convey the meaning of "lately"? Or are there other meanings it can convey? Also, I am not familiar with "ido", but that appears to me as a progressive ending attached to nothing. Is it a word on it's own in this case? Please forgive my ignorance. |

Yes, it generally conveys the meaning of "lately", "recently". "Ido" is the Past Participle of the verb "ir" : "Yo he ido" = "I have gone".
