---------------------|----------|-------------
comienzo el fin de la conversación
de la conversación

Estábamos hablando, y creíamos que...
--------------<------------------->-------------

= I think ...
Yo creí que ... = I thought ... (but I don't think that any more)
Yo creía que ... = I thought ... (and I'm not saying whether or not I still have the same opinion)

You can use the preterit after seeing/hearing something, and it's now over. For example, after seeing a movie.

Me gustó mucho.
No me gustó.
Me pareció ridícula.

Thank you very much

Could you please tell me if the "Estuvimos charlando de..."/"estabamos charlando de..." part would vary depending on whether or not the sentence being reported is in the present tense or the past tense?

Thank you

The difference lies in what you're saying:

Estuvimos charlando del asunto un buen rato. <= You're emphasizing that it was an activity that you did for a limited time and then stopped doing it.

Estabamos charlando del asunto. <= You're simply saying that you were talking about something, but without emphasising that the discussion is over.

<= "Estábamos" gives a background, and then you tell the important part, that the phone rang.

I hope that helps you
