I would pick out the word friki for this side of the puddle, which is very new, just a few years old. Nerd is not getting through, at least right now. A friki is also someone zany, a weirdo, not only a computer friki.
Example: the guy who went to the last eurovision contest for spain. |

Rusty, I agree with you, I also say "Come libros" - traga libros jajajaja
Tambien usamos "Raton de biblioteca" - queriendo decir que esa persona practicamente vive en las bibliotecas leyendo y estudiando, although....nowdays with the internet who has the time to go to a library???
