"Hace no mucho tiempo" translation

I am reading a child's story book written in spanish.

Hace no mucho tiempo había un circo llamado Circo Estricto.

Please, help with idiom.

I keep thinking this says "Once upon a time there was a circus called/named ...."

or maybe

"One time there was.........."

no mucho tiempo .... "not long ago"

thanks

'Not long ago' is the correct translation.

Había una vez = Once upon a time

"Not too long ago".

The sentence, the way it's constructed, sounds a little weird, although not incorrect. The usual construction would be "No hace mucho tiempo".

Not long ago.

If I want to say. I was there not long ago when I was young.

Thank you for your corrections.

'Not long ago' is a good opening line for a story.

'Not too long ago' is a good translation for 'no hace mucho tiempo' in a basic sentence like yours.

So, for your sentence, you should add the adverb 'too'. It's also important to include a comma.

"I was there not too long ago, when I was young."

It would make more sense if you said 'younger' at the end instead of 'young'.
