Incidir

John, conscious of the bad habits in life that are sometimes picked up at home, stresses this idea...

Would stresses be an accurate translation of incide in this context?

This is not a normal use of the verb "incidir", and to me it sounds plain wrong.

The speaker may well mean "to stress", as you say, although I feel they intend to say something like "to assert", "to state", "to express".
