This is not a common phrase, though. It's usually seen as 'take pleasure in another's sorrow'.

I've used "to rejoice in one's trials," or "to enjoy one's trials."

What about "drown your sorrows in... another tub of ice cream"?

Well, I guess you 'could' say "drown your sorrows in your own sadness", but I don't think anyone has said that.
But you could
drown your sorrows in...
your tears?
your poison of choice?
your J.B. on the rocks?
your pain?
your melancholic mood?
your beer?
your bowl of custard?

At any rate, it's another idea/variation that may be useful in some circumstances...

None of these actually conveys the same meaning as pjt's correct offering. The idea is that you actually enjoy your own sorrow, not that you try to forget it in, say, beer.

Strictkly speaking, Perikles, you are absolutely right.
But, correct me if I am wrong, looking at it conceptually, I do not think there is that much of a difference. Yes, "drowning" your sorrow you are "trying to get rid of it" "destroy or submerge your sorrow" "your sadness", "wallowing in one's sadness" one is "enjoying it".
But "actually" "enjoy it", unless one is really a rabid masochist, I do not think someone really enjoys being sad. To me the "wallow" or "enjoy" is used in a very "ironic" "sarcastic" vein, and so, one is "enjoying" his sadness, and is "accepting it" as the way it is... (and still he is sad...)
I get the different nuance...
However, if I had to shot a video of someone "wallowing in his sadness" and/or "drowning his sorrows in some Juanito el Caminante [sorry, Johnny Walker]" seems to me that even if I was Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, I would definitely have a very hard time to SHOW that difference with the IMAGES... (Most likely I would have to use a Voice Over, if I wanted to make the difference clear...)

(Maybe we are making a mountain out of a molehill, but of course, my suggestion was in the direction of poking a little bit of fun... at such a sad subject... sniff!)

Seeing that we are beating this subject to death, I can't quite agree with you. On a philosophical level, consider von Schlegel's wonderful poem, Lob der Tränen (In Praise of Tears), set to music by Schubert here.

Laue Lüfte,
Blumendüfte,
Alle Lenz- und Jugendlust,
Frischer Lippen
Küsse nippen,
Sanft gewiegt an zarter Brust;
Dann der Trauben
Nektar rauben,
Reihentanz und Spiel und Scherz:
Was die Sinnen
Nur gewinnen:
Ach, erfüllt es je das Herz?

Wenn die feuchten
Augen leuchten
Von der Wehmut lindem Tau,
Dann entsiegelt,
Drin gespiegelt,
Sich dem Blick die Himmels-Au.
Wie erquicklich
Augenblicklich
Löscht es jede wilde Glut;
Wie vom Regen
Blumen pflegen,
Hebet sich der matte Mut. ................

Brisk winds,
Scent of flowers,
All Spring and youthful joy,
Fresh lips
Stolen kisses,
softly pressed on tender breast;
Then the grape's
nectar stolen,
Round dances and games and jokes:
Whatever the senses
can achieve:
Ah,does it ever fulfil the heart?

When the moist
eyes shine
from the dew of melancholy limes,
then unsealed,
therein mirrored,
the sight of Heaven's meadow.
Then suddenly
in the twinkling of an eye
every wild gleam is extinguished;
as from the rain
flowers are nurtured,
dull spirits are raised.

Not with sweet
floods of water
did Prometheus mix our lime.
No, with tears;
Thereby in longing
and in pain have we come home.
A bitter threshold
these springs
for the birth of our earthly senses,
as they pressed
out of the narrows
into the sea of life.

Eternal yearnings
float in tears
and surround the stark world,
In their arms
it's salvation
they evermore uphold.
Shall your nature
then be purged
free from the dross of Earth,
You must in weeping
unite yourself
with yonder water's holy shoots.
....

Well, you made your point, Perikles!
Like Becker, Gustavo Adolfo, "amargo es el sufrir, pero siquiera, ¡padecer es vivir!" (Quoting from memory, but should be quite accurate.)

Or Rubén Darío:

Juventud, divino tesoro,
te vas para no volver
,
cuando quiero llorar no lloro,
y a veces lloro sin querer...

And so on and so forth...

It is that existential Shopenhauer "beautiful sadness", yes...

But probably I am more with Bergson and Antonio Machado,

No quiero cantar ni puedo,
a ese Jesús del madero,
¡sino al que anduvo en la mar!

As I say, there is "beauty" and "aesthetics" above that "sadness"... as a matter of fact a consummate actor may play any emotional tone level and ENJOY creating these tone levels... But (and that may be a personal very subjective thing) I go for the exhilaration and the joy of creating... if possible at higher tones, like enthusiasm, strong interest... games... I.e., I like to drown my sorrows up in the sky! (I may be too peculiar!) At any rate, I may like better to beat this subject to... LIFE!

as from the rain
flowers are nurtured,
dull spirits are raised.

A pleasure to read these lines... (particularly) (I may have a fixation on enjoying myself for real...) Thank you for being there at the other end of the net... your posts are always excellent!
