How would you translate these two sentences? Are they both grammatically correct?

Amy mira al chico.
Amy mira el chico.

Only the first is correct. The 'a' is necessary because the direct object is a person.
The translation of the first, and only correct, sentence is in your thread title (minus the subject).

You're right, Rusty. "Al" is the contraction of "a el", so, the "a" is necessary.
