Luchar a brazo partido

Hola sé que esta frase significa, "go all out/take it to the max/exert maximum effort"

No lo entiendo la construción.

Luchar - to fight
Brazo - arm
Partido - match

¿Pedéis explicarme el razonamiento de este modismo? (the reasoning behind this saying)

Muchas gracias por adelanto y cuidaos amigos
