All that is fine but you must also close your throat a little as you are exhaling with some force, placing your tongue behind your front teeth, raising the back part of your tongue also but making sure there is a dip between your front and your back tongue.....
It is so difficult to explain

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to keep trying all these methods and hope that it clicks eventually. I'm trying the quick exhale thing right now but I just can't seem to get my tongue vibrating!

Being scottish i roll my r's as much as the spanish, so maybe try speaking in a scottish accent..
