An interesting approach, but I think questionable. Spanish derives from vulgar Latin, not the classical Latin root of Norman French. While you can quote thousands of 'familiar' words, you could probably quote as many 'false friends' which confuse the issue. (I can't think of any at present - too much cheap Spanish wine )
