Does "esencial que" need subjunctive?

Estoy escribiendo sobre don Quijote.

Yo quiero decir: It was essential that (don Quijote) have a lady who is in love with him.

Is it: Era esencial que (don Quijote) tuviera una dama de quien enamorarse.
o
Era esencial que tenía una dama de quien enamorarse. ?

Or if I am completely wrong please correct me.
