I have learned two ways to ask for directions:

Donde esta al mercado? and
Donde queda el mercado?

Which is correct? It seems the second choice actually translates "where it is the market"

In high school, I leaned the "esta" version

I would use

¿Dondé esta al mercado? o ¿A dondé esta al mercado?

No miré personas usó "¿Dondé queda as mercado" mucho

Pero soy un nueva estudiante español

I think both versions are correct.

Sometimes you can't literally translate. If you do, then you might get easily confused.

¿Dónde queda el mercado?
Where is (Where's) the market at?

¿Dónde está el mercado?
Where is the market?

Maybe in English one is used more than the other but in Spanish I think they are both correct.

Additionally, if you're asking for directions, using ¿dónde está...? or ¿dónde queda...? might not get you the information you're looking for. In other words, they'll tell you where it is, but not how to get there. Another option is ¿Cómo llego al mercado? (How do I get to the market?).
