Romper esquemas

Not always.

Generally, it means to come out of the ordinary.

But "romperle los esquemas a alguien" means to do something (not necessarily extraordinary) that surprises someone or even shocks that person.

Oxford-Superlex gives also these translations,
romperle los esquemas a alguien (familiar) (echar abajo los conceptos) to shatter somebody’s preconceptions; (planes) to ruin somebody’s plans
