Cancha

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 30, 2009

cancha (feminine noun (la)) — field, pitch. Look up cancha in the dictionary

Le pegó tan fuerte a la pelota que la sacó de la cancha.
He hit the ball so hard it left the playing field.

Uhmmm... Ok this is not directly about this word but on a word it looks very similar to (I hope you guys don't mind the digression..)

Now I hope this will not be considered rude..

But a Peruvian guy recently told me about the word 'concha', meaning (apart from shell) also to be a reference to a certain female bodypart and this being quite a rude word for it (if in fact there is such a thing as a very polite word for it without using euphemisms..).

I just wanted to check if this is indeed true and also, if this word is used like this in all Spanishspeaking countries?

It word is used in likely in Spain, here generally is used that body female part is named for its name, therefore, I believe that it's used at least in Europe, and well I believe that in South American people can have another way to say the word with different mention.

In Chile, Perú and Argentina concha means also the female part, intimate at that.

There is nothing polite about it...

I do not know what other countries would use concha like that... maybe Uruguay and Paraguay but not sure.

I've heard this word from Latin American people. We don't say it (we have another ones ). I always think that Spanish is a rich language in many aspects...

Pues creo que la mayoría de los idiomas tienen varios eufemismos anatómicos.

Conchita is woman's name in Mexico, but then again Dick is a common name for men in most English-speaking regions.

Concha, Conchi and Conchita are familiar names for Concepción, here in Spain.
