When used metaphorically, I think the 'on' is omitted: Walking a tightrope, but skating on thin ice.

Se puede decir "walking on a tightrope", pero "walking a tightrope" parece más común (independiente de que sea metáfora o no).

Sin embargo, estar en la cuerda floja sería "to be on a tightrope", ¿no?
