I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

Talk about anything here, just keep it clean.

Question I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

While this quotation is widely attributed to Voltaire... it cannot be found in his writings... did you know who actually wrote it?

Well, this is more like a rhetorical question, because the phrase was invented by a later author as an epitome of his attitude (Voltaire's attitude). It appeared in The Friends of Voltaire (1906), written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym S[tephen] G. Tallentyre.

What do you think about the maxim, and the attitude?

¿Quién dice por ahí que Rousseau decía "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."?

y poniendo -Rousseau, me 109 hits...

By the way, I like the sentence.

I did not mean to imply that Voltaire used these words verbatim and should be surprised if they are found in any of his works. They are rather a paraphrase of Voltaire's words in the Essay on Tolerance — "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."
