Parlem catalá

Being the language lovers that we are... A place to talk about, or write in languages other than Spanish and English.

Catalan is my second language. It is not my mother language, but I have
lived in Catalonia for many years. I understand it better than I speak it and I speak better than I write it. But more or less in defense
It's unusual to find people to speak Catalan without living there. Did you know that there is a region of France where Catalan is spoken? Catalan in those regions is spoken with a French accent.

It seems that a lot of Catalan translates easily--unless I got it wrong.

Good, Poli!

Em defenso - me defiendo - I can get by it.
Estàs potser...? - Tal vez estás en... - Are you in ... maybe? (or are you living...)
Molt - mucho - a lot

You surprised me!

One of the reasons I like Spanish so much is that when you speak Castilian you have the added dividend of understanding elements of other Romance languages too--even French, but certainly Portuguese, Italian and (as I found out today) Catalan. Thank you Irmamar.
Em defiendo- I can defend myself--as in I can defend myself in Spanish is I must is another way of saying I can get by
in Spanish.

Very interesting. I also had no difficulty in making sense of your Catalan, although, like Bob, I thought em defenso meant "in self defence". Over the French border, it becomes Langue d'Oc I believe and a different dialect is spoken in the Balearic Islands. It has many similarities with French, Portuguese and Italian as well as Castilean Spanish.

Encara = ancora? Molt = molto? Parlo = parlo (Italian) = parle? (French)
Viure = vivir = vivre?
millor = mejor = meilleur?
em = en =em (portugues)?
sapiga = sabia ?...etc.

Next week I am spending a few days in Barcelona. I hope they can understand me there.
