Personal 'a'
Im trying to say, "At 9 in the morning, my alarm clock wakes me."
I think it is this: A las nueve en la manana, mi despertador despierta yo. am i supposed to have a personal 'a' before yo to make it: A las nueve en la manana, mi despertador despierta a yo. or do i have it completely wrong or right? |

What you need is an indirect object pronoun, placed before the verb. Then, if you want to emphasize the indirect object, you would add the indirect object itself (in addition to the pronoun). Since the indirect object is a person, the personal 'a' is used to form it, as you thought, but then you need to use a prepositional pronoun for the emphatic 'me'.
Give it another try. A las nueve de la mañana, el despertador ... |

No, not quite.
The indirect object pronoun needs to agree with the person in question. You wrote 'se', which is an indirect object pronoun, but is only used when both an indirect and a direct object pronoun are in the third person (this is done to avoid cacophony). Choose the correct indirect object pronoun by matching person. The other pronoun, at the end of the sentence, is a prepositional pronoun. You need to find that. Have a look at this page. It lists all the pronouns in a table. Match person, and you're done. Dative = indirect object Last edited by Rusty; November 01, 2011 at 10:23 PM. |

You've got the right indirect object pronoun.
If you want to emphasize it, the indirect object at the end of your sentence needs to have the correct prepositional pronoun. It isn't 'yo'. (You do NOT need to emphasize the indirect object pronoun, by the way, so no indirect object is needed at the end of your sentence.) Last edited by Rusty; November 01, 2011 at 10:24 PM. |
