"en esas andaba..."

Hi everyone!

I am working on a Spanish translation and need help with the expression "en esas andaba...."

The full sentence is "En esas andaba Juan cuando Maria hizo un llamamiento desesperado."

Is it something like "Juan was in this situation when ..." or "Juan was working on these things when ..."?

Thanks in advance for your help!
