El tiempo

Normalmente veo en los libros de gramáticas que lo corecto decir el tiempo es con el verbo "hacer'. Por ejemplo: ¿Qué tiempo hace? o Hace frio, hace calor... Pero oigo mis amigos latinos dicen ¿Cómo está el tiempo? Está frio o está calor. ¿Quál es corecto?
