I don't know how to transcribe it, but it sounds something like /pan/. Why?

without the n

But you don't really hear the end. It's a nasal sound.

I don't know how to transcribe it either.

At this site, choose French, single vowel sounds, and then move your cursor over "a" nasal on the page that loads.

Thanks Rusty, with that link I was able to find the pronunciation. It's basically "pa" with a barely pronounced nasal n at the end.

@Iris Why? Well, I'm just trying to re-learn the few French words I used to know. You never know, you might need them someday.

Thanks Marsopa, I agree, you don't really hear the end.

From what I know of the French, they would be pleased with you for learning the word for bread.

French movies

I have been trying to revive my defunct French too. I have been watching Disney movies in French. So far, Lady and the Tramp has been the easiest to hear.

I think in English, the nasal sound in "pain" would be like a very stressed (more acute) vocal in "Fang" and "n" is not pronounced...
