Hi guys,

Does the word gemela exist?
Is it always gemelo(s)?

Ana y Rosa son gemelos.

Creo que gemelo/a indica que son idénticos, y mellizo/a que no lo son. Pero no estoy seguro.

@Sancho: Correcto. Sólo hay que cambiar "identicales" por "idénticos".

Sí. En español, basta con que un elemento de un grupo sea masculino para referirse al conjunto con el plural masculino. (Cinco chicas: todas fueron a la fiesta. Cinco chicas y un chico: todos fueron a la fiesta.)

Ana y Raúl son mellizos.

En el habla coloquial mexicana, no se distingue entre gemelos y mellizos, así que no sería extraño escuchar "Ana y Raúl son gemelos".


Y, como ya se dijo:
Ana y Rosa son gemelas. (Idénticas) / Ana y Rosa son mellizas. (No idénticas)

Tambien en Mexico se dice cuate y cuates por gemelo.
Cuate es como amigo tambien.
Nunca falta un cuate que me acompañe a la cantina
a tomar una cerveza.

Depende. Es así si hablas con alguien que ha estudiado la filología a nivel universitario. Pero en el mundo real del español que habla la gente normal, mellizos pueden ser idénticos o, con mayor probabilidad en mi experiencia, si digo que soy mellizo la persona con quien hablo no sabe qué quiere decir.
