Canary in a coal mine?

Does anyone know if "canary in a coal mine" is used in Spanish (canario en una mina de carbon?). This phrase refers to an indicator of the environmental or health conditions in a certain location or circumstance.
Thanks.

You can use it as direct translation, because it will be understood.
"Canario en una mina de carbón" is used as an alert in enviromental/economic circles, but usually explaining the origin.

examples from the web
