¿Hay una regla sobre cuándo necesitas la "a" y cuándo no? No veo un patrón.

Fíjate en lo que se explica aquí. No encontrarás el verbo en cuestión, sino la frase 'Verbs that are followed by a often are referred to as "springboard verbs" beacuse [sic] they mark the beginning of an action.'

De vez en cuando hay verbos que cambian de sentido cuando se usa con una preposición así que ten cuidado.
