Escuela / Colegio / Instituto

What is the exact difference between these three in Spain:
• La escuela
• El colegio
• El instituto

I know that ‘el instituto’ is only for secondary school, but can the other two refer to both primary and seconday school?

Many thanks in advance.

In Spain, "colegio" and "escuela" are practically synonymous. That is "school".

(Escuela, however can combine into "Escuela de Artes y Oficios" - Arts and
Crafts school, and other combinations too)

"Instituto", literally "institute" normally refers to "secondary school", "high school". Never heard it referring to primary school.
