Um ... sorry I'm late getting back to this, but I've had a lot going on... Anyway - there are a couple of things that I don't follow. Let me see if I can quote them here......

I kind of lost the idea of the "guiris" and the "red people" from the North. I assume this is because the pale-skinned people who live farther from the equator (and thus have less sun) come to vacation in sunny places and get sun burned. Right? What exactly does "guiris" mean, besides a pejorative for tourists from foreign countries? And what does any of that have to do with "shrimp" (that's what "gambas" means, right?)?

¡Qué dolor da ver a un guiri rojo en verano!

¿Lo pillas, gambita?
I definitely do not get Irma's joke.....

I totally get this statement. When I was younger (and hopefully stupider than I am now), I would go to a tanning salon () for a few visits to "burn" myself before going to Florida each spring. That way I could lay on the beach for a week and work on my tan (because the initial burning was out of the way...) Dumb, dumb, dumb.......

"corn worm"? Huh?

What does any of this have to do with being a "count"?

First of all, I don't get where the first part of this comes from, "cuidado" vs. "condados". "Condados" = "counties", right? Where did that word come into the conversation?

And where did the vampires come into the conversation?? And I don't understand the phrase "pero informático sí".

.......... so you see, Chileno - sometimes I understand parts of these conversations, but when they turn into general "banter", I typically lose the thinking. Especially when there are jokes or plays on words. I think I also lost track of this thread because we got so far off from the original meaning of the word of the day. SOOOOooooo ... I guess I'll be off to give my Thanksgiving weekend guests a drubbing.

Shrimp go red when you cook them. Hence Irma's joke.

¿"Guiri" viene de "guirigay"?

It's a reference to some children's TV programme (Sesame Street?) which had a count who was a vampire. Vampires avoid sunlight.

Counties is a reference to the suggestion that I'm a count. (See also: duchy, ruled by a duke; principality, ruled by a prince). We informáticos (there isn't really an equivalent word in English - I.T. geeks is probably as close as you can get) have a reputation for living in basements and fearing the evil day-star.

And then of course there would be Stoker's 'Count Dracula' also.

Of course. Do you really think I like to play the fool just because?

Pues aparece en la RAE: guiri

Nunca lo hubiera dicho

Se ve que en Canarias os llaman "choni" (se supone que viene de Johnny). A ver si Perikles sabe algo del tema
