Ser peor que un mal parto

Ser como un mal parto o peor que un mal parto is a common expression in Spanish, it means that something , or a situation is really bad, a bad parto is supposed to be really painful, and long. Is there a similar expression in English?

In the USA we often use it was worse than root canal. which is a dental procedure. I have also heard it's more painful than giving birth, but I think that's an older term, less used and certainly gender specific.
