It's true that the use of "mayordomo" as a member of a guild or association charged with a specific task is rather archaic, but it's still widely used in some activities in the Catholic Church. There are "mayordomos" chosen for specific festivities and they perform specific tasks: they clean the chapels, dress the saints or virgins, carry the sculptures during processions, things like that.
The one in the Lord of the Rings, seems to have been a steward serving in the king's house indeed, right?
