Difference...

one use of por is for motive, and one for para is purpose, use, or goal.

How can you tell the difference?

Por no comer, murió de hambre.
Por=motive. He died. What was the motive? He didn't eat.

Para hacerse rico de forma rápida hay que ganar la lotería.
Para=goal. Goal? Get rich quick. What do you have to do? Win the lottery.

El cuchillo se usa para cortar.
Para=use. Self explanatory?

Voy a la peluquería para cortarme el pelo.
Para=purpose. Where am I going? To the hairdresser. What's the purpose? To get my hair cut.

Does that explain?

I don't really see the reason for this thread . It was about a week ago this same question was asked because of homework exercises, and @Irma gave a very good summary of the differences.
