Peluca
This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 16, 2008
peluca -feminine noun (la), wig, toupee. Look up peluca in the dictionary ¿Crees que en algún momento usarías una peluca? Do you think you would ever wear a wig?

Los colombianos dicen le colgué la peluca, para significar le dejé plantado.
Existe la expresión ni hablar del peluquín, al menos aquí en España.

La expresión ni hablar del peluquín se traduce no way en inglés, ¿no?

Ni hablar del peluquín, eso es más antiguo que la Tana... Gemma, Gemma... Gemma. Y muy local.
No creo que sea una expresión muy rentable. No creo que la conozca mucha gente. Sí, Rusty, significa no way.

I think don't mention the wig is a funny thing to say. I thought it meant don't bring up that subject (whatever that subject may be) but I guess it means no way.

Yes, it's really funny. But in Spanish hasn't got its literal meaning. It means plainly no. To convey what you want, Poli, you should translate the English translation back into Spanish: No menciones el peluquín / el bisoñé / la peluca.
All this stuff about wigs dates back to a kind of Spanish musical show, from the time of cabaret, which was called cuplé. Sure ni hablar del peluquín has got its origin in one of this shows.

LADYS/GENTLEMEN
Whom the forums usa a wig. Time ago, one old man told me, I use a wig, and I, like you should use a wig, 'cause a wig give life. My point of view is only a adage. Have a good day. |
