Uña

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 7, 2008

uña -feminine noun (la), fingernail. Look up uña in the dictionary

Si no tuviéramos uñas en los dedos, sería muy difícil agarrar las cosas.
If we didn't have fingernails on our fingers, it would be very hard to grasp things.

Chicos, ¿conocéis la expresión ser como uña y carne?
Otra que se me ocurre estar de uñas. Defender algo con uñas y dientes.

Thanks, Iris, for providing us with useful sayings and phrases for nearly every Daily Word!

Ser como uña y carne = to be thick as thieves
Estar de uñas = Ponerse de uñas con alguien = to be mad with somebody
Defender algo con uñas y dientes = to defend tooth and nail

Yes, I second what Rusty says... Thanks so much Iris for providing related saying and words for the daily words. It's a great learning experience.

In Mexico they use the term uña to describe people who steal, but I'm not sure exactly how it's used. Does anyone have any more info?
