"Pulso" (or "vencidas") is a competition between two people where both put their right elbow firmly on a table, and hold each other's hand to push it down, to see who is stronger. The person pushing the other's hand down on the table wins.
As a figurative meaning, "aguantar el pulso" is to keep your strength against a rival who is trying to make you give up.
