Dar mucho de sí

I think it means: to have many positive points.
It this correct?
Is the phrase used often? If not how would you say it. I would say:
tener muchos aspectos positivos, but that's a direct translation from
English.

Yes. Both phrases in red correspond. But, Dar mucho de si (mismo), is different. Well, many will consider it a positive point/good aspect (a virtue), many don't.

Does that help?

In Mexico is very widely used, but mostly for material things.

"Dar de sí" = estirarse

Like when new shoes are a bit too tight and after using them for a while they are already comfortable.

Los zapatos de piel dan de sí.
Compré un cinturón que me apretaba, pero ya dio de sí y ahora me queda bien.

I think you guessed right the figurative sense, Poli.
Algo que da de sí es algo que permite sacarle provecho, que tiene muchos aspectos positivos.

Gracias Chile Y Mexico. Ahora sé que el dicho es internacional y úlil y que no traduce al inglés.
En inglés tenemos que usar has positive points(or aspects). Tenemos
use usar el tono de voz indicar si es un cumplido o el acto de encontrar algo positivo en una cosa imperfecto.

Also make a great effort (to do or to get something):

Los deportistas de élite dan mucho de sí en las competiciones.
Intento dar mucho de mí en los exámens (rendir al máximo).
Sé que das mucho de ti, pero los demás no darán tanto de sí como tú.

It's often used with a negative meaning:

Pobrecito, no da más de sí, pero hace lo que puede.

It means when you gave the best of you.

Wait.

Does "you gave yourself to the task" or " you gave yourself much to the task" ring a bell in English?

Also: something will give, meaning that will become loose.

So da mucho de sí means has a lot going for it which is another way of
saying has positive aspects or has an up side.

Not exactly, you are thinking of it as a quality, it's an action for me. As quality, you are correct....
