Canasta
This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for May 11, 2008
canasta -feminine noun (la), basket, hamper, hoop (basketball). Look up canasta in the dictionary El costo de la canasta básica-- arroz, leche, huevo, azúcar-- sigue incrementando. The cost of staple foods-- rice, milk, eggs, sugar-- keeps rising.

For me canasta only means hoop. When talking about food I would say la cesta de la compra or if I want to translate staple foods: alimentos básicos.

Recién ahora leí esas palabras, alimentos básicos, in las noticias Telemundo.

El costo de la canasta, eso sí que es una aliteración, buey.
También yo, como Iris, aunque ella sólo habla español nominalmente, digo la cesta de la compra, y alimentos básicos. Debe de ser que así lo decimos en España. Tampoco digo costo, para evitar la broma de confundirlo con hashish, sino coste o precio. Por último, usaría el verbo incrementarse, en modo impersonal:

Menos cachondeo, tronco. No te rías de mi nominalmente.

No había visto tronco usado así antes. ¿Qué sería una buena traducción?

Ese uso de tronco es muy madrileño, aunque también se dice en otras partes de España. Es una palabra idiosincrásica, así que tiene difícil traducción. Yo creo que es algo así como buddy, man...
I'm not very good at English slang, son I cannot give more options. Any other idea?

You say Any other ideas?, love. Sorry, but I cannot get rid of the red.
You can also say:bloke, mate, guy and for the plural folks.

At first I thought idiosincrásica was a typo, until I looked it up. I thought it was supposed to be *idiosincrástica because of the English idiosyncratic. But I see I was wrong. Thanks.
If you want to get rid of any special formatting-- color, font face, size etc-- just select the text in question and click the remove formatting button () in the upper left hand corner. Oh, and all the proposed transations of tronco are fine: buddy, man, bloke, dude, guy, mate etc. (bloke and mate aren't used in the US)
