Bob, when the person doing the hoping and the person doing the winning are the same, then you would normally use the infinitive:
(El) Espero que (él) gane la lotería. (Yo) Espero ganar (yo) la lotería. (Instead of "Espero que (yo) gane la lotería.)

I agree with David's explanation. "(Yo) espero que (yo) gane la lotería" is not incorrect, but it sounds a bit clumsy for a native speaker.

Well, I do not agree. When the subject in both clauses is the same, infinitive is required:
Espero ser un gran abogado. Espero que seas un buen alumno. http://cvc.cervantes.es/ensenanza/bi...08/08_0801.pdf (página 2) |

Can one write "Él" or "El" for "he" ? Are they both correct? Tense ¿espera o esperó? Last edited by brute; July 26, 2009 at 02:31 PM. |

@Brute: When there were only typing machines, capital letters could not be accented there, but it was necessary to put accents on them when writing by hand. Since computers allow all kinds of characters, one must put accents on capitals.
Many people still keep the exception, but it's better to write them all. As for the tense, it's "(yo) espero", first person singular, present. Btw... there is a typo in the first sentence
