A clash ensued

Does this sentence mean that the clash started or that it went on?

Thanks.

To ensue means to follow, from L. insequi, so the clash started, but following on (and caused by) something else.

There was a small collision between two cars. The drivers got out and started arguing, and a fight ensued.

So, seguir (from Latin sequi). You're not so far from having a Romance language.

Thanks.
