Les contesto or los contesto?
I am struggling trying to find an answer to this question......so if anyone on here could answer it would be appreciated.
Why does this sentence use an indirect object pronoun( les) why doesn't it use ( Los) It's not saying " I greet to them" it is saying "I greet them" |

As I understand, contestar works in the same was as decir. It needs the indirect object pronoun because you are saying 'something' to them not saying 'them'.
Likewise you are answering them 'with something', although in English we just saying answering them. The Spanish version allows you to express that 'something' is said/answered 'to someone'. (nb saludar is to greet - so les saludo = I greet them, contestar is to answer) I'm not sure if I have explained that well but it might help if you think of the indirect object pronoun showing that the verb is not acting on the person you're speaking to instead it's acting on the words said. Les contesto: To them I answer (with words). Last edited by LearningSpanish; September 03, 2012 at 02:45 PM. |

Sorry about the screw up on the meaning of the verbs......just got them mixed up. Anyways......so are there any other verbs that do the same kind of thing that ones like decir and contestar do?
Btw......it seems like you could do the same thing with verbs like escuchar. Like if your were to say.......no la escuches. It seems like if you followed your line of reasoning that you could say, no le escuches ( although I know that would be incorrect) If you think about it though.....you are listening to the words that she is saying....not her. |

Good point - and your comment seems totally logical to me. I'm no grammarian but if what I understand from the link below is right it seems that sometimes escuchar can take a indirect object but only when you clearly refer to what the person said or the information that you heard (this being the direct complement). But when there's no direct complement mentioned (ie what they said isn't mentioned) the person themselves become what you listen to or hear and for that reason they are the direct object.

Les contesto - les conteso A ellos. (Indirect Object)
Los contesto - contesto esos cuestionarios (Direct Object) ¿A QUIÉN contesto? - Les contesto a ellos y a ellas. ¿QUÉ contesto? - Los puntos que se me cuestionan... ¿Comprendes?

And what about escuchar? It seems that sometimes it is used with the indirect object pronoun but more usually not. Would you be able to illustrate that too please?
p.e. - ¿funciona? I heard him yesterday when he said that he wouldn't go. o necesita ser 'lo'? o funcionan los dos? dependiente si refiere a él o a lo que él dijo. Lo escuché ayer cuando dijo ..... |

Here's something from the DPD that may help:
Escuchar 2.

¿Lo has entendido? (A él.)
