They're both used.

I would only use hace sol. You can also say :Es un día soleado

Other examples on how to speak about the weather:
Está lloviendo
Está nevando
Esta granizando
Está nublado
Hace viento
Hay niebla
Hace frío
Hace calor
Hace bochorno
Está helando
