What part of speech is this?
So we have some translations for class to do along the lines of, "They call him Ivan the Terrible," and I'm really quite bemused as to what part of speech "him" would be. It doesn't really seem to be an indirect object - they're not calling "Ivan the Terrible" to/for/at him. But nor is it the direct object, because they're not calling him. So I can't figure out how to translate this.
Le llaman Ivan el Terrible ? Lo llaman Ivan el Terrible ? Something else altogether? |

Re: What part of speech is this?
I can give the translation, Tomissimo the grammar :-)
They call him Ivan the Terrible --> direct translation -Ellos (le) llaman a él "Ivan El Terrible" - --> Ellos le llaman "Iván el Terrible" --> Le llaman "Iván el Terrible" Lo llaman "Iván el Terrible" Is OK if its a horse, or something animal a person is le (men) or la (women) Thing are lo or la (A aquel caballo) lo llaman "Bucéfalo" (Bucephalos, Alexander's horse) (A aquella chica) la llaman "Matahari" (famous spy) (A aquel mundo) lo llaman "Matrix" (A aquella casa) la llaman "casa de los locos"

Re: What part of speech is this?
I don't know if I can really give an explaination of the grammar. I'd say it's more like an indirect object than a direct object, and since I guess it has to be one or the other, I'd say it's a D.O.

Re: What part of speech is this?
