Cuando un problemita no está atendido, aumenta y se convierte a un gran problema. En inglés podemos decir algo así: He had a cough that soon snowballed into full-fledged pneumonia.

¿Existe una palabra igual in español?

Tenía un problemita que pronto se transformó/convirtió en un problemón.

Tuve un problemita que después fue un problemón.

I only know, "agravarse" "aumentar rápidamente" "crecer hasta proporciones gigantescas"...

In your example I'd say, "se agravó con rapidez..."

Ah sí. Remontar.... pero eso hace mucho tiempo que no lo escucho decir. Yo nunca lo he usado así, pero he escuchado a otras personas decir por ejemplo:

Tuvo un resfrío que (se) remontó en pulmonía. Queriendo decir que se agravó.

Por influencia del inglés, aquí se llega a escuchar "crecer como bola de nieve".

Pero coincido con que puede ser empeorar, agravarse, agrandarse, amplificarse, volverse más grande... y tengo una sobrina que dice: "de lagartija creció a cocodrilo", pero no es expresión común.
