Personal a
Do we need to insert the ‘personal a’ between ‘conmemorar’ and ‘las víctimas’?
If we leave it out, is it incorrect? “El artista mallorquín Domingo Zapata, afincado en Estados Unidos, ha sido elegido para conmemorar las víctimas de los atentados del once de septiembre de 2001.” |

Personally, I'd prefer to use the personal "a", because it's people we are talking about (and about a very sensitive word as "víctimas", which would need more respect). Some people tend to omit prepositions (as if they were a choice) because they feel their sentences wouldn't flow if they included them.
