You can use both perder el tiempo and malgastar el tiempo. You can also use gastar el tiempo. They all mean to waste time. The first is much more popular.

to squander money = malgastar el dinero
to waste money = gastar el dinero

I will correct you.

Yo pesaba que malgastar es una palabra usada solo en situaciones de dinero, o monetariamente.

Greetings.

Over here in europe we say entretener, malgastar being possible, but sounds like money

No te quiero entretener

I don't want to waist your time

I would say "No quiero hacerte perder el tiempo" for "I don't want to waste your time".

Agree with Hopper and Vikingo
In Spain:
I don't want to waist you time
No quiero hacerte perder el tiempo
No quiero que pierdas tiempo por mi causa ( I don't want to waist your time due to me? )
No quiero entretenerte
No te quiero entretener
he waisted my time.
me hizo perder el tiempo
me hizo entretenerme
me hizo que me entreteniese

Malgastar is usually money, or things wich are really worth, like my worktime
Me hizo malgastar mucho tiempo en un proyecto irrealizable
Me hizo malgastar mucho dinero en la bolsa
Me hizo malgastar muchos esfuerzos y no funcionó.
No quiero que malgastes tu tiempo en mí (It's a very polite form of "I don't want to waist you time", since you give a "money-value" for his time)

Saludos
