Average in appearance, nondescript, ordinary, like one who wouldn't
"stand out in a crowd".

Fair means pale skinned, and in the past(prior to the 20th century meant
very pretty) In English a woman with no special looks (neither good nor bad) is a plain Jane. I don't know if there is a male equivalent.

"Ser del montón" is not only about physical appearance, but to all fields where one could stand out for a positive or a negative reason, but one just belongs to the average.
· Como estudiante no es ni bueno ni malo, es del montón. As a student, he's not good, nor bad; he's an average student. · Ninguno de esos equipos sobresale. Todos son del montón. None of those teams stands out. All of them are average teams.
